There's a narrative floating about, that in the 80s, all the left wing boomers took a hard right turn and became Reagan Republicans and I think this is a deep misunderstanding of that generation.
What actually was the case was that the actual left wing boomers were ALWAYS a minority. (I feel like if you actually knew any lefty boomers you'd know this, but I dunno.) The youth culture was counter culture and leftist but you could consume that and still be conservative.
Counter culture as an aesthetic has a long history in american society, recurring somewhat regularly, right down to free love, religious experimentation, communes, snake oil and dubious dietary decisions.
