After racism was defined as a crime and the and Brazil's Supreme Court equated homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia with racism, many people have adopted the fact that “it is a crime” as the main argument to condemn these practices and have relegated to the police and the courts the role of fighting them, legitimizing institutions founded on racism, whose mission is and has always been to control and repress minorities.

@antimidia This is the fundamental problem with hate crime laws. They don't work and worst of all they legitimize the biggest culprits and perpetrators: the state itself.
