On more positive news it still looks amazing given its age. I was momentarily stunned at how sharp and responsive those opening cutscenes looked. And the characters while initially annoying and abrasive start to show some interesting depth and quirks. I am having fun with this game, not a massive amount, but enough to keep going.
It isn't until you've finally slogged through all the combat mechanic tutorials and gotten to the part of the story where the characters start to have conversations instead of arguments that both issues finallly smooth out. At that point you've finally learnt just enough backstory to notnbe completly lost and you're familiar with the fight mechanics just enough that shake ups like party switches and new enemies feel like manageable challenges instead of retry merry-go-rounds
The battle system also has issues. A lot of people were turned off at the start by how different it is and I'm not sure I'd call it good, half the menu seems to be redundant by design. But for me the biggest problem is how it drip feeds at the start. Each elemnlent is unlocked at set stages of gameplay but again the pacing is off. Fights with limitations get boring as its just x repeat over and over. But when a new element is introduced it throws off your rhythm and strategy.
Each cutscene has expository terms you hear for the first time and are not elaborated on as all the characters are familiar with them. It takes awhile before more subatantial explanations come. Even worse, many of the terms sound very similar. L'cie, Pulse L'cie, Fal l'cie c'ieth etc. And once again the differences for these terms comes much later but in the meantime here's five outcasts arguing with each other over them.
Currently working through FFXIII, which 8 won't pretend was a poorly maligned classic, but think its a game where the worst parts are in the beginning. The plot starts in media and drip feeds explanations, and the battle system is a massive adjustment that takes several hours to finally get into. Other games have done both and been more warmly recieved, but XIII had franchise history and its pacing was just awful.
